Last night there was a demonstration to free political prisoners in Sao Paulo, which was motivated by the arrests of Fabio Hideki Harano and Rafael Marques Lusvarghi, who were protesting the world cup last week.
During the demonstration, about 800 cops attacked the protestors. During the attack, a lawyer named Daniel Biral was brutally arrested for demanding the identification of an unmarked officer.
“A policeman grabbed me by the neck and put me in a headlock. Another grabbed me by the leg. In the middle of the stairs on the way to the paddy wagon, the guy who was grabbing my head let go. I started screaming ‘media, media’. Then the DP, the guys opened the car and told me: ‘There’s, no media here, now you’re gonna die.”
Daniel went on:
They beat me several times. Three hits were harder than the rest because they hit me in the temple. Then I blacked out. When I woke up I was outside the paddy wagon in front of the police department. So they begun to drag me inside.
Even after identifying himself as a lawyer, Biral was taken to 2 other departments that night. During this 2 and a half hours, he did not know why he was in jail.
The delegate was saying that lawyers can’t take pictures and, that taking pictures was not the purpose of a lawyer. I said I would only talk with a lawyer by my side, with another OAB member together because the arrest was illegal.
Besides BIRAL, the lawyer Silvia Daskal and at least six demonstrators were also arrested that night. Lawyers should meet with representatives of the Bar Association of São Paulo on Wednesday 2 to request action on the case.
